Description:
Mission Gorge offers a phenomenal climbing experience, right here in San Diego. The gorge is only a 15 minute drive away from SDSU in Mission Trails Regional Park. The part riparian and part desert terrain park is home to many animal and plant species, the San Diego River watershed, and lots of rock. The cliffs and rocks here are unique in that they provide outstanding routes for the first time and advanced climbers. This is one of the best recreational day excursions that San Diego has to offer! Bring a lunch, water, and an adventurous attitude. Our leaders are not only dedicated to your safety but to the sport. Their expertise, positive encouragement, and humble character, will help you conquer new heights and leave you with a memory to last a lifetime.

Weather:
San Diego enjoys beautiful weather year round with an average daily temperature of 70.5 degrees Fahrenheit (21.4degrees Celsius). The Mission Trails Park environment has temperatures in the summer reaching 100 degrees. The rocks and cliffs provide shade for climbing if used with some common sense. Mornings are perfect for climbing west facing walls while east facing cliffs would be wise to tackle in the afternoon and early evening times.

Cost Includes:
Leadership, climbing equipment (including helmets, shoes and harnesses) and qualified staff to set top ropes. Our staff are experienced climbers that will help coach so you can achieve your climbing goals!

Cost does not include: We do not provide transportation or food on this outing. Directions to Mission Gorge are available in the itinerary and will be given at the pre-trip meeting. Please have a good breakfast and bring lots of water!

Clothing:
No open toe shoes are permitted on our hike to the rocks! Even though it will be warm, pants are recommended so you don’t scrape your knees on the rocks. Clothing suggestions will be given at the pre-trip meeting.

Facilities:
There will be available portable toilet facilities at the bottom of the climbs and flush toilets at the Visitor's Center.

Health and Physical Conditioning:
Participants should be comfortable hiking uphill for about 20 minutes and ready to climb! Trying out the indoor climbing wall at the ARC is a great way to get the “feel” of outdoor rock climbing!

Risks, Hazards and Safety:
Rattle snakes, prickly plants and other desert flora and fauna are all present at Mission Trails. We require that climbing helmets be worn when near the rock. There are numerous risks involved with rock climbing; however, we do take every precaution to make your adventure as safe as possible.

This trip is designed for people who are self-motivated and want to make the most of their experience. Plan on being a contributing member of a group of 12 to 14. The leaders will often need to make decisions based on the needs of the group—not the special needs of one individual. NO DRUGS & ALCOHOL WILL BE PERMITTED AT ANY TIME DURING THE TRIP. We invite you to come on this trip to enjoy the experience and the company of your fellow trip members.

Brief Itinerary:
Transportation is not included in the cost of this trip! We will meet at Mission Trails State Park at 7:30am.

Directions to Mission Trails State Park from the Aztec Recreation Center Parking Lot: Exit Left onto 55th—proceed south, turn right onto Montezuma Rd. and proceed west. Exit onto Fairmount Ave. North. Continue on Fairmount until it turns into Mission Gorge Rd. Continue on Mission Gorge in right lane. Turn left on Father Junipero Serra Trail—park anywhere in the first lot!

We’ll hike up to the rock and begin climbing. We stay in the park until about 3pm.

Pre-Trip Meeting:
The Pre-Trip Meeting is required and is held the Monday, the week of your trip, from 6-7pm in the AMC rooms, right outside the ARC. You will meet the leaders and other trip members, as well as cover all details such as weather, the menu, safety issues, and clothing requirements.
