Description:
A sea kayak trip to Baja California is an immersion in culture, land, ocean and sky. We will camp upon a beautiful bluff overlooking the majestic Pacific Ocean and paddle several miles of coastline, in a sit-on-top sea kayak, over a three day weekend. This is a great trip for first time kayakers and Baja visitors. At night we’ll sit fireside and tell stories over hot chocolate and great food. Daytimes are dedicated to adventure. Depending on Ocean conditions, we may visit a sea lion rookery, the infamous blowhole (La Bufadora), snorkel, day hike, paddle through the many challenging rock garden “rapids”, sea arches and caves, or surf kayak on the Bay side. Opportunities also exist for fishing the nearby kelp paddies. This trip is limited to 10 kayakers so sign up early!

Itinerary:
We will depart from SDSU on Friday 2pm and drive into Mexico, making a dinner stop on the way to Los Arbolitos, where we will set up camp. Saturday will include introduction to kayak skills and day paddle to La Bufadora, weather permitting. In the afternoon, enjoy snorkeling the cove or relaxing at our campsite. Sunday morning we will paddle south from Los Arbolitos to visit the sea lion rookery, then pack up and head home, stopping along the way to enjoy the local cuisine. We plan on arriving back at SDSU around 8pm.

Weather:
Day and night time temperatures vary with the seasons (Fall & Spring), but you can anticipate a nearly identical climate that we are experiencing along the coast in San Diego. Specifically, nights can be in the low 50’s and day time highs can be in the low 80’s—always with a chance for windy conditions. We will review the specific packing list at the Pre-Trip meeting.

Cost Includes:
Aztec Adventures leaders, round trip transportation, two breakfasts, one dinner with dessert, all group camping and kayak gear, kayak instruction, campsite fees and permits, and complete personal equipment outfitting (sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, camp chair, wetsuit, duffel bag, dry bags, etc.).

Cost does not include: Two road meals.

Food:
We hope you will be amazed, as many of our trip members have been, by the delicious dishes we will prepare together. Examples of common dinner meals include: lasagna, chicken pot pie, enchiladas or chili and cornbread; for breakfast, we offer granola, oatmeal, fruit, muffins, pancakes and fried potatoes; desserts include brownies, cakes, and of course, s’mores! Please let your leader know if you have any dietary restrictions, as we can usually accommodate them.

Camping/Lodging:
Our campsite will be primitive without running water; however our campsite includes a pit toilet and a campfire ring. Aztec Adventures will provide drinking water and all other group camping equipment. You will be expected to share a tent with one or two trip members. There is a BEAUTIFUL view of the ocean!

Health and Physical Conditioning:
Paddling on the open ocean can be very strenuous for some because it requires the use of the entire upper body—not just one’s arms. All trip members must be confident in their swimming ability, as it will be required of everyone to practice capsize drills (getting in and out of kayak in open water). In addition, trip members will be carrying kayaks and other gear up and down a very steep launch ramp. From now until the trip begins, we highly encourage you to get in shape.

Risks, Hazards and Safety:
There are numerous risks and hazards associated with ocean kayaking. Nearly every trip, a trip member or two becomes sea sick—we highly recommend taking non-drowsy motion sickness medication if you think you may be susceptible. The ocean conditions can change dramatically in a short time period. The intense sun can cause sunburn quickly. Wind can be a factor that makes camping, eating and sleeping uncomfortable. Insects, cactus and other sharp desert plants, and slippery and sharp rocks require extra caution. Not dressing appropriately can result in heat or cold illnesses (Hyperthermia or Hypothermia). Hyperthermia is the raising of the body's core temperature. Hypothermia is the lowering of the body's core temperature. Not drinking enough water results in dehydration and not being in adequate physical condition can result in sore muscles. Trip members must make a conscious effort to be safe. One person’s disdain for safety will always result in hardship for the group. If we do have an accident or injury that requires medical attention beyond the scope of our leader’s experience, the trip is immediately over without refund. Our leaders are trained to administer first aid in an outdoor environment, however, while they may be able to treat injuries they cannot always prevent them.

This trip is designed for people who are self-motivated and want to make the most of their ocean kayak experience. Plan on being a contributing member of a group of 12 or less. The leaders will often need to make decisions based on the needs of the group—not the special needs of one individual. This is a group experience and everyone is expected to help with all the camping tasks such as: cooking meals and clean-up, setting up camp, and organizing gear. DRUGS & ALCOHOL WILL NOT BE PERMITTED AT ANY TIME DURING THE TRIP. We invite you to come on this trip to enjoy the sights of Baja California and the company of your fellow trip members.
