Description:
We will spend the weekend at Rancho La Mentada, a 13,000-acre working cattle ranch located in the sierra foothills of northern Baja California.  The ranch offers an ideal backdrop for our weekend of yoga and relaxation. Rancho La Mentada is home to horseback trail riding, miles of trails to explore, and presentations in old time ranching techniques. We will also visit a nearby Kumeeyay Indian reservation and learn first hand how to weave traditional reed baskets and other traditional native crafts. The retreat entails two morning and two evening yoga sessions with afternoon options of horseback riding and meditation. Whether you are new to yoga or a seasoned practitioner, this personalized trip is for you.

Brief Itinerary:More Info
Depart SDSU on Friday at 2:00pm and head down through the San Isidro border crossing into Baja California. Following the coast line we will make our way to our destination, arriving at 4:30pm. We will spend the evening becoming familiar with the ranch, enjoying dinner and an evening yoga session. Saturday will be spent practicing yoga, riding horses, swimming in the “cement pond” and learning about the heritage of La Mentada and the surrounding area. Sunday we will wake up for a morning yoga session, explore the ranch’s boundaries and then head for home, arriving in the late afternoon.

Weather:
Day and night time temperatures vary with the seasons (Fall & Spring), but you can anticipate highs in the 80’s and lows in the 50’s for most of Spring and Fall. We will review the specific packing list and weather forecast at the Pre-Trip meeting.

Cost Includes:
The fee includes: one professional yoga instructor, riding instructors and camp chefs. 3-4 hours of daily yoga instruction, all lodging fees, round-trip transportation via air conditioned 15-passenger van, 6 meals (2 breakfasts, 2 lunches & 2 dinners), complete outfitting.

Your Yoga Instructor:
Al Toth is a registered Yoga Teacher as well as a certified personal trainer. Having studied with BKS Iyengar and Patahbi Jois his style combines elements of Iyengar, Ashtanga and Vinyasa flow to create a very centering practice. Al’s teaching is known for his clarity, enthusiasm, precision and alignment.

Food:
We hope you will be amazed (as many of our trip members have been) by some of the delicious dishes that are prepared. All meals will be provided by our gracious Mexican hosts who will fire up the coals and prepare for us some authentic ranch bar-b-que meals. We’ll dine in the adobe dining hall and swap stories of our adventures out on the trail. Please let your leader know if you have any dietary restrictions as we can usually accommodate.

Camping/Lodging:
Your cabin was constructed on-site from handcrafted adobe bricks in the old Mexico architectural style.  Each cabin sleeps 3 and is complete with its own bathroom, shower, and old-fashioned wood stove.

Health and Physical Conditioning
Yoga can be strenuous at times. However, with proper instruction and technique you should enjoy a rejuvenating workout. Keeping yourself well hydrated, fueled up, and protected from the sun is essential and will help keep your energy level high. If you weigh more than 250 pounds, we strongly advise against participating in this trip as the ranch has very few horses that can handle this type of weight safely and comfortably. Trip Members should be in good physical condition and able to hoist themselves onto a horse without assistance.  Prior experience horseback riding is not necessary, as instruction will be provided.

Risks, Hazards and Safety:
Trip Members should be comfortable around horses and cattle – PLEASE NOTE: This is a working cattle ranch and as such trip members need to adhere to the instructions of the leaders as well as Rancho La Mentada staff at all times!  Other hazards include dehydration, loose rocks, and cactus. NO DRUGS OR ALCOHOL WILL BE TOLERATED AT ANY TIME DURING THE TRIP (i.e. from the time the trip departs SDSU to the time it returns to SDSU).  In addition, we ask that you respect and follow the safety instructions of the leaders.
