Joshua Tree Movie (5mb)
Description:
Joshua Tree is a virtual wonderland of high desert scenery. This is one of the most famous climbing areas in the United States with unique, beautiful lanscapes and over 4,500 rock climbing routes to choose from! We will spend our time getting to know this unique National Park by learning safe rock climbing skills and applying Leave No Trace hiking techniques in this delicate but rugged environment. This trip is a great opportunity for first time rock climbers, campers and high desert visitors. Experienced trip leaders will provide you with all the instruction necessary to meet your climbing goals.
Brief Itinerary:
Depart from SDSU Friday 2pm. We’ll stop for dinner on the road to Joshua tree. We’ll set up our base camp and get a good night’s sleep! Saturday we will wake up early and have a hearty breakfast. We’ll hike to our climbing site and learn rock climbing techniques, safety skills, and more! After a full day of climbing, we’ll head back to our base camp and have a delicious dinner, a camp fire and enjoy the stars. Sunday there will be opportunities to rock climb and to explore the park by day hiking on the Boy Scout Trail or the California Trail. We’ll leave at 3:00pm on Sunday—having dinner on the way home on the road. We plan on being back at SDSU no later than 9:00pm.

Our campsite will be primitive without running water or toilet facilities. The campsite includes a pit toilet, a picnic table and a campfire ring. Aztec Adventures will provide drinking water and all other group camping equipment. You will be expected to share a tent with one or two trip members.
Health and Physical Conditioning:
Hiking and climbing in Joshua Tree can be strenuous on the entire body. Designated trails may be non-existent. We could be hiking and climbing for the better part of six hours a day. Staying well hydrated, taking your time, resting when necessary (but not for too long), and keeping your energy level high is essential. Trip members should be in good physical condition for climbing rocks up to 50 feet high and hiking on sand and rugged desert terrain. From now until the trip begins, we highly encourage you to get in shape and highly recommend you to take the climbing wall orientation at the ARC and climb at the indoor wall to get a feel for the physical demands of climbing outside.
Risks, Hazards and Safety:
There are numerous risks and hazards associated with the desert. Joshua Tree is a high desert environment where temperatures can change rapidly. Rattlesnakes, scorpions, cactus and other sharp desert plants require extra caution when hiking. Not dressing appropriately can result in heat or cold illnesses (Hyperthermia or Hypothermia). Not drinking enough water results in dehydration and not being in adequate physical condition can result in sore muscles. Trip members must make a conscious effort to be safe. Rock climbing demands respect for the safety instruction provided by the leaders. One person’s disdain for safety will always result in more hardship for the group. If we have an accident or injury that requires medical attention beyond the scope of our leader’s experience, the trip is immediately over without refund. Our leaders are trained to administer first aid in an outdoor environment; however, while they may be able to treat injuries, they cannot always prevent them.
This trip is designed for people who are self-motivated and want to make the most of their Joshua Tree National Park experience. Plan on being a contributing member of a group of 12 or less. The leaders will often need to make decisions based on the needs of the group—not the special needs of one individual. This is a group experience and everyone is expected to help with all the camping tasks such as: cooking meals and clean-up, setting up camp, and organizing gear. DRUGS & ALCOHOL WILL NOT BE PERMITTED AT ANY TIME DURING THE TRIP.
