| Description:
Joshua Tree is a virtual wonderland of boulders and magical desert scenery. We will select an easy to moderate trail that affords good scenery and overnight camping. We will spend our time getting to know the desert and learning proper techniques for treading lightly in this delicate but rugged environment. This trip is a great opportunity for first time desert backpackers and visitors to Joshua Tree.
Cost Includes:
Leadership, transportation, most food (except snacks & road meals), group camping gear (stoves, cook kits, safety gear, etc.), campground, entrance and/or shuttle fees, and all specialized equipment related to the activity (i.e. canoes, rock climbing gear, etc.).
Food:
We provide breakfast, dinner & desserts. Participants are responsible for meals while on the road. Please let your leader know if you have any dietary
restrictions as we can usually accommodate.
Equipment & Clothing:
Clothing should include hat and sunglasses as well as sunscreen. Expect temp. range from 50's at night to 90's during the day. PICK UP A DETAILED BACKPACKING EQUIPMENT LIST AT TIME OF REGISTRATION.
Facilities:
Portable toilet facilities (outhouses) are available near each campsite. There is no running water.
Physical Ability:
Participants should be comfortable camping in a desert environment and have a desire to challenge themselves both physically and mentally throughout the weekend.
Rules of Conduct & Safety:
NO DRUGS OR ALCOHOL WILL BE TOLERATED AT ANY TIME DURING THE TRIP (i.e. from the time the trip departs SDSU to the time it returns to SDSU).
Our Expectations fro Participation:
Plan on being a contributing member of a group of 12 to 14. We will make decisions as one group, travel as one group, camp as one group, and share the work to be done equally as one group. Please note: If you are the independent type that prefers to do things alone then this trip is not appropriate for meeting your needs.
Risks, Hazards & Safety:
Joshua Tree is a high desert environment where temperatures can change rapidly. Other risks include, heat illnesses, dehydration, other campers and climbers, high winds, desert plants and animals (cactus and rattlesnakes) and very hot or cold temperatures.
Brief Itinerary:
Depart Friday 4:00p.m. and arrive in Joshua Tree 10:00p.m. Saturday hike and explore all day. Sunday hike out to trailheaduntil everyone has had enough (usually 3:00 p.m. ) and return to SDSU by 9:00p.m.
Pre-Trip Meeting:
MANDATORY ATTENDANCE REQUIRED! Check your receipt for the time and date. Meetings usually take place the Monday prior to your trip in the AMC classrooms in front of the Aztec Recreation Center from 6:00 to 7:30pm.
